Think you can’t donate blood? Think again.

Think you can’t donate blood? Think again.

Almost half of all Australians believe they can’t donate blood. Let’s break down the biggest myths that could be holding them back.

Myth one: I need to be in perfect health to donate blood.

While certain medical conditions can prevent donation, most healthy adults are eligible to give blood. But what is healthy? Don’t worry, you don’t need to be a gym junkie or marathon runner. As long as you’re not feeling unwell, you’re probably healthy enough to donate. If you’re still unsure you can always ask our AI assistant Jamie (find him in the bottom corner) or speak to one of our friendly staff on 131495.

Myth two: My tattoos and piercings prevent me from giving blood.

New Ink? No worries. Your mum might not like your new look, but if your tattoo was done in a licensed studio, we love it! You can donate plasma immediately after getting a tattoo and blood after 7 days. The same rules apply for ear piercings, but there is a blanket 4-month wait period after any type of body piercing.

Myth three: I smoke and vape so I can’t donate.

Vaping and smoking may not be great for your health, but they won’t stop you from donating. If you vape or smoke and have no other complicating health conditions, you’re likely still eligible to give blood. However, it’s best to avoid lighting up for at least 30 minutes before and after you donate to aid recovery and ensure the donation process is smooth.

Myth four: If I can’t give blood, I can’t save lives.

If you find out that you’re not eligible to donate blood, don’t worry, there’s more than one way to give life. Plasma donation is a great alternative, and it has different eligibility requirements. Plasma is just as critical as blood in medical treatments, and your donation could be used in 18 life-saving ways. So, even if blood donation isn’t an option, you can still make a huge difference.
