We’re not the same (and it’s great!). The vital role of diversity among blood donors
Hurstville, New South Wales (NSW) is home to our newest blood donor centre. But why have we chosen to open our doors there? Learn more about how we choose the perfect spots and the role diversity plays in helping find the best blood match for more Aussies.
When it’s time to save a life, finding the right match is critical. A mismatch between donor and recipient blood types can trigger a life-threatening immune response, so it’s important to get it right. But did you know, there’re over 300 possible variations to your blood type?
It can all come down to the recipient. For example, when we’re looking for the right match for those who need numerous blood transfusions, such as someone with leukemia, we have to check for extra variations to make sure they get the right treatment. But with 1 in 3 people needing blood in their lifetime, there’re a lot of matches that need to be found.
Here’s where diversity makes a difference
Did you know that around half of all Australians were either born overseas or have a parent who was born overseas? As Australia becomes more ethnically diverse, so does our blood. With more people having additional variations to their blood type, we need to make sure this diversity is reflected among our donors too. That way, we can keep finding the best blood match for everyone.
Okay, so what makes Hurstville the best spot for a new donor centre?
In the latest Census, just under one-third of the Hurstville population identified as having Chinese ancestry. But Lifeblood researchers have found that less than one percent of our donors are of Chinese background. The new donor centre will give a big boost to the ethnic diversity of our donor panel and help to save up to 48,000 lives every year.
No matter your background, you can make a difference
Blood demand is at a 12-year high across the country. So, whether or not you’re a Hurstville local, you can make an impact. How? Find your closest donor centre and book in today because your donation could save a stranger, a friend or someone who matters.
