Looking for a reason to give blood? This couple has a few.

To help celebrate the launch of our Life Is The Reason campaign, we caught up with married couple and milestone donors, Amanda and Michael, to find out what motivates them.

Amanda and Michael, have been together for 27 years and while their lives have changed a lot in that time, there’s been one constant in their relationship — giving blood. While they can’t always donate together or as often as they’d like, they’ve found plenty of reasons to keep rolling up their sleeves

“When my husband got closer to the 100 mark it stirred me on to donate fortnightly so that we could do the big 100 together”. – Amanda

Making a difference without breaking the bank is the reason

Amanda and Michael were donating long before they knew each other, both starting in their youth. As teenagers, they didn’t exactly have money lying around to donate to charity, so blood donation was the obvious choice. Not only was it a cost-free way to make a difference, they’d also get to dig into their favourite snacks after each donation.

Family is the reason

A few years ago, Amanda and Michael were in a bit of a donation rut when they received some devastating news. Their nephew had had a seizure and needed to be put into an induced coma. To help stabilise him, doctors administered multiple plasma transfusions. Seeing how their donations could help the people they care for most, motivated them to get back into donating regularly.

A little competition is the reason

Saving lives doesn’t mean you can’t have any fun, and Amanda and Michael aren’t afraid of a little friendly competition when it comes to who donates the most. For Amanda, it was also about doing something special with Michael, explaining, “When my husband got closer to the 100 mark it stirred me on to donate fortnightly so that we could do the big 100 together.”

Your reason could save lives

Lifeblood needs to recruit 100,000 new donors over the next 12 months and we’re looking for 100,000 reasons to convince Australians to give blood. Share why you donate at The Reason Gallery and you could inspire countless more donors to roll up their sleeves and help those in need.
